Paul Peter Vergos 2 months agoStayed at The Sofia Hotel for a couple nights and came away pretty happy with it. The location was super convenient, easy to walk to restaurants and a few downtown spots. Room was clean and the bed was comfy, which matters a lot to me. Staff at the front desk were polite and got us checked in quick. The building has a nice classic feel without being outdated. Only small issue was the room felt a little compact, but it was still comfortable enough. Overall, it felt like a solid place to stay and I’d book there again.
Craig Sterling 2 months agoI had a fantastic stay at this downtown gem! The location is perfect for exploring the city, but what really stood out was the attention to detail in the rooms. I was thrilled to find a Nespresso machine in my room—it’s such a premium touch that made my mornings so much better. The atmosphere is elegant yet welcoming, and the entire staff was professional and helpful. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a comfortable and upscale experience in San Diego!"
J McBride a month agoWe are having one of our bathrooms remodeled, so we booked the Sofia Hotel which is a few blocks away from our home, for my wife to spend the first few days after her surgery, so that she could recover more comfortably. We checked in Wednesday night, around 11:30pm. Once we arrived to the room, it was far more worn and rundown than the photos, but overall seemed relatively clean. It was warm & stuffy, so we decided to turn on the air. Almost immediately, both my throat and my wife's throat became extremely dry. We both started having minor coughs due to the air. Upon spotting the air vent, we definitely did not feel comfortable or safe breathing the gunk in the vent in. However, it was too stuffy and hot in the room without the air. Given this, we decided that it would be safer for my wife to recover at home, despite the construction. We checked out with the front desk attendant and left around 12:15AM, 45 minutes later. The next day, we realized that we were not checked out of the room. When we called to asked if we could be checked out, an employee name Ian informed us that he could not provide us with an email confirmation that we had checked out. My wife repeatedly asked for this, and Ian kept repeating that we had booked a non-refundable room & could not get our money back. We repeated that we just wanted a receipt that we checked out. We were told the night staff couldn't check people out. The room wasn't great, but the biggest issue was the customer service. Ian was combative, rude, and uncooperative for what was a very standard request. I believe they wanted to keep us checked into to avoid us complaining to Expedia as well as continuing to charge us the $24 per day, "WiFi fee".
Anna V a month agoI stayed here based on other reviews but was a little disappointed. Immediately walking in the hotel smells like dirty carpet. It smelled musky like they tried to mask the smell of the dirty carpet with a scent. Going up to the second floor the staircase smelled like urine. I kid you not it smelled like pee. Another thing if you’re looking for a quiet getaway this is not the place for you. Because the building is old the windows are paper thin and not soundproof so for hours we can hear the engines reaving and the ambulances going on. The walls are not soundproof and heard out neighbor sneezing! On the plus side the location is fabulous but if the other stuff does not bother you then this is the place for you.
Dilery Lovillo-Oliva a month agoOur first room had plumbing issues with the sink filling and refusing to drain and us later coming to find that the shower did the same. Maintenance is not available after a certain time so we were not able to be assisted with the problem that would have been easily addressed. We were moved to another room the following day, but that room had A/C issues with one unit cooling and the other blowing hot air into the sleeping quarter. Even with maintenance attempting to come and troubleshoot the issue (unsuccessfully) the room became very muggy due to the dichotomy in temperatures. The pillows in both rooms were absolutely horrendous. Lumpy, small, scarce and not what would be expected from a hotel whatsoever. If you have neck or spine issues: bring your own pillows because you will not find comfort in the ones they provide. The front desk staff was never overtly welcoming. However, I will note that the valet parking was very quick and helpful.
